Force Majeure

an orchestral perspective on nature unleashed

Earth, air, fire, and water erupt from primal chaos in Jean-Féry Rebel’s tone-poem, The Elements, with a shock unequalled until Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring two centuries later. Also featured are Marin Marais's Alcyone suite and Jean-Marie Leclair's sizzling Violin Concerto, with Concertmaster Emlyn Ngai, soloist.

Rescued by the Red Army

rediscovering Johann Gottlieb Janitsch

Shimmering surfaces, beautiful counterpoint and heart-melting melodies won Janitsch’s chamber music the ranking of “the best” in his day. His modern revival just got an exciting boost with newfound manuscripts—carried off by the Red Army during World War II, stashed in Ukraine, and now repatriated to Berlin—which we'll perform in their modern world premieres.

No Strings Attached

love and death with music and puppets

Singers are cast alongside life-size puppets for an unforgettable theatrical experience inspired by two timeless music dramas. Set to lush orchestral scores by Monteverdi and Handel, military victory turns to heartbreak in The Battle, while the Icarus legend gets recast as a wry cautionary tale against "flights" of love in Through the Flames.

With return visits from soprano Marguerite Krull, soprano (Clori, Tirsi & Fileno) and baritone David Newman (Hoshanna!), and introducing tenor Aaron Sheehan.

Fresh Fasch

celebrating Johann Friedrich Fasch's 250th anniversary

Last season’s smash-hit, never-heard-anything-like-it, brought-down-the-house modern premieres of large-scale orchestral music by Fasch just scratched the surface of this visionary maverick’s work. Tempesta celebrates his 250th anniversary with a brand-new program of ear-popping modern-day firsts.
